So the story of how I got introduced to Peter Katz goes as follows. Before all the Oscar madness, Once was taken on a small promotional tour and premiered in a handful of cities. Including Toronto.
Glen Hansard and John Carney were on hand at this advanced screening. Unfortunately, since our Canadian border patrol had completely run out of bad guys to catch, they were now focusing in on adorable piano-playing Czechs and kept Marketa from joining us.
Nonetheless, after the movie finished to a round of raucous applause, and a brief Q&A session was conducted, Glen obliged us all with a short acoustic performance. Part way through, he noticed a familiar face in the crowd and brought him up to the stage. Glen handed over his faithful guitar, and both men sat with their knees over the edge of the stage and we all got to take part in a very special moment.
Twenty-something Torontonian Peter Katz has now just released his sophomore album, which, to make this long, rambly story come full circle, features none other than Glen Hansard on the title track.
If you like the song, which, most Glen Hansard/Swell Season loving people probably will, then I suggest you check out http://www.myspace.com/peterkatz for more.
(*Special mention has to be made to my lovely friends, who not only got to sing with Hansard that night as well, but also bought me copy of Katz’s debut CD)
/sorry for the hazy quality of the song - you’ll all just have to pick up Katz’s new CD to get a clean copy ;)
